#MISSING: Paul Merrill, 87 - Belmont, CALIFORNIA (Missing near Oregon border - car found on side of the road)

Law enforcement officials are asking for the public's help in finding an 87-year-old Belmont man reported missing last week.
Paul Merrill was reported missing by his family Sept. 4, a day after he had intended to go to the Mount Shasta area. He checked into a hotel in nearby McCloud on Sept 3., and checked out the following morning, said Belmont police Capt. Patrick Halleran. He was also seen at a Chevron in McCloud that morning.
Then, on Sept. 5, a woman saw Merrill's car, a silver 1956 Mercedes convertible, on the side of the road about 15 miles east of McCloud — but didn't think much of it.
The next day, the woman's husband saw a man matching Merrill's description in the woods near that area, Halleran said. They didn't put things together, he said, until they saw reports of Merrill going missing Monday.
They phoned in a tip. Authorities in Siskiyou County went out looking for him on Tuesday, but couldn't find him.
The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department has had a search-and-rescue operation looking for Merrill since Wednesday, said Allison Giannini, a spokeswoman for the agency.
Belmont police officers, the CHP and the U.S. Forest Service have also joined in trying to track Merrill down, Halleran said. There's no indication of foul play, he said.
Anyone with information is urged to should call the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department at (530) 841-2900.
